This week’s Naked Wreck is Rick Santorum, Republican Presidential Candidate who has made headlines for the litany of cringe-worthy quotes regarding same-sex marriage and contraception. While I respect conservative values, I do not respect Santorum’s insistence that more liberal values are dangerous:
“One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country…. Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s okay, contraception is okay. It’s not okay. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.” (Santorum to CaffeinatedThoughts.com, Oct. 18, 2011)
Here, Santorum positions contraception as a gateway drug to sexual depravity and lasciviousness, instead of the responsible health measure it often is. What’s more, when Santorum insists that the state has the right to ban contraception, Santorum insists that the state has the right to dictate private sexual lives and family planning. And that makes him a Naked Wreck.
Santorum would be an excellent candidate for Naked Therapy, as I could help him untangle his fear and guilt regarding sexuality. His own sexual repression causes him to view the sex lives of other’s as criminal and indecent. If his beliefs go unexamined, who knows what sexual misconceptions he can spread with his campaign platforms?
If you want to read more about Rick Santorum, Psychology Today provides an excellent exploration of the canidate and his warped perception of human sexuality here.
